5 Ways to Get Involved at University
You can make new friends, find fun activities, and still have time for your studies.
You’ve probably been told that you should get involved when you go to university. You’ve probably also been told that you should go to class, study hard, and get good grades when you go to university. Oh, and be sure to eat and sleep too!
How can you make time for everything? The best way is by understanding the different options you have to get involved and finding the ones that work best for you.
1. Student clubs
Joining a student club is a great way to meet new people where you have something in common. It could be an interest, a desire to learn something new, a club that aligns with your cultural background, and so much more. With most clubs, you can engage as much as your schedule allows, whether that’s dropping in for a quick visit or getting involved in the club’s leadership.

2. Faculty associations
A faculty association will be more aligned with your program and academic goals and is another great way to meet like-minded students. And again, you can be involved as much as you’d like, and these can be another way to engage in leadership roles.

3. Intramurals
Playing sports is a great way to get physical activity while engaging with the campus community. Intramural sports are different from varsity sports. With intramurals, all levels of ability are welcome and there are so many different sports to choose from! And most leagues run for a term, making it a shorter commitment.

4. Students’ Union
Your university’s students’ union is something that you’ll be part of, just by being a student! The executives of the union are there to represent your interests to the university while also supporting student clubs, planning events, and offering job and volunteer opportunities. You can get involved from your first year, through attending events or volunteering, or even just voting in Students’ Union elections.

5. Residence activities
If you choose to live in residence there’s a good chance there will be events and activities within your residence. This is a great way to meet the other students you live with and meet people with different interests and from different programs. And residence life can be so great that you might choose to work as a Residence Don in your upper years to continue being involved.
